After fighting his way up through all those rounds, Clifford has finally been defeated. Someday, we'll look back on this day in history and celebrate. But maybe not for this reason. Maybe because we have something else that we need to celebrate that just happens to fall on the same day. But maybe, just maybe, we will look back each year and celebrate the defeat of Clifford and the rise of Snoopy and we'll raise a glass to all the fine dogs who were defeated.

Anyway, as you guys can imagine, I'm pretty happy. Snoopy is wonderful and cute and he's friends with a bird, which is always a plus in my book. Snoopy is our 2016 Mutt Madness Champion! All hail King Snoopy!

So it finally happened. Clifford beat out all the other dogs in his division and all the other dogs on his side of the bracket. Clifford is one of our championship dogs. Out of 64 wonderful dogs, you guys picked Clifford. I don't know if my extreme dislike of Clifford can ever be fully expressed with words, but Louis C.K. comes pretty close. He's not that great of a dog, guys! He's just big and red. He doesn't do anything else. He's just not that cool.

But you know who's pretty cool? Snoopy. What's not to love about Snoopy? He's super cute and cool and he wears sunglasses and he's friends with a little bird! But there's also this. But don't worry about that! Down with Clifford! Snoopy forever!

Of course, that's just my opinion. You're welcome to vote for whichever dog you like.

The Debunker: What Color Is the "Black Box" on an Airplane?

In 2009, a global cabal of artists, designers, and scientists called the International Colour Association decided to create a day to honour—er, "honor"—color in all its forms. International Colour Day is now celebrated every March 21, since that's the spring equinox, the day when light and darkness are in perfect balance. All month, we're going to have Jeopardy!'s Ken Jennings with us, debunking a full spectrum of chromatic claptrap. Your trivia knowledge will soon be in the pink.

The Debunker: What Color Is the "Black Box" on an Airplane?

Like many important inventions, you never hear about them unless something has already gone terribly wrong. By law, the rear fuselage of every commercial airliner in the world—sometimes the rear cargo hold, sometimes a compartment above the galley ceiling—carries a device that records flight data and cockpit audio while the plane is in flight. This is the famous "black box" that's designed to tell investigators what went wrong when a plane goes down.

American inventors were working on different kinds of aircraft recorder as early as the 1940s, but the modern "black box," with combines an FDR (flight data recorder) with a CVR (cockpit voice recorder) was the brainchild of Australian engineer David Warren, who built the first prototype in 1956. His lab bosses weren't interested, but a visiting British government minister loved the idea, and the recorders were soon standard worldwide. Today's model is a titanium-shielded device the size of two shoe boxes, designed to withstand temperatures hotter than molten lava, impacts of 3,400 times the force of gravity, and the pressure at the bottom of the ocean.

Divers and investigators often spend weeks or even months searching for flight recorders after a crash, so, as a moment's thought will reveal, black is the worst possible color for a "black box." In fact, these recorders are required by law to be painted bright orange and covered in reflective tape. It's a mystery where the term "black box" came from in the first place, since the boxes were never black. David Warren's very first prototype was a crimson-painted cylinder he called the "Red Egg." In science, a black box is a system whose internal workings are completely unknown, so the name may be a reference to the fact that the device is designed to open up the "black box" of an in-flight airliner. Or the name could be an artifact of a time when recorders had to be studied in a darkroom, as they contained photographic film. The flight recorder has been called "the greatest single invention in the history of safety engineering," but the story of how it got its name is still, well, a black box.

Vivere 8' Double Hammock - Your Choice

At one point in human history, the hammock was new. Seriously. The hammock was the killer app.

As you plan to lounge about in the warm weather of late Spring, please keep in mind that what you call a weekend past-time, other cultures once called "furniture." That's right, the hammock isn't something that existed before humans like rocks or caves or the alien pyramids. The hammock was something humans developed AFTER they had some civilization around them. The hammock protected us from scorpions and poison ants and tiny land wizards and all the things that like to annoy people that sleep on the ground. The hammock was a survival technique, not a novelty item!

We bring that up because it's important you show your hammock some respect. Don't just hang it up and say "Hey, we got a hammock out back, lolz!" and then never use it. IF YOU BUY THIS HAMMOCK YOU USE THIS HAMMOCK! You get out there and relax and enjoy yourself! How would you feel if you caught some future-person taking something YOU created for granted? Would it feel good? Huh? Or would you be upset that ol' high-and-mighty future-person was such a self-centered jerk?

Music Monday: RIP Maurice White

Happy Music Monday! On February 4th, the great and wonderful Maurice White passed away, and somehow Scott just didn't hear about it until right now. He's a big Earth Wind & Fire fan so he's going to make up for his mistakes right now! Let's pay tribute to a musical juggernaut together.

Earth, Wind & Fire - After The Love Has Gone

This is the first Earth, Wind & Fire song I ever heard. It was on the stereo in our downstairs room, it was summer, the back door was open and there was a light breeze. I had nothing to do and most of the day to not do it in. I was still a kid, and I didn't know the band's name, but I felt like it was the most perfect song for that moment and I still do. I didn't know anything about the history of the band or what they were trying to do or really anything at all, I just knew that it was an amazing song that felt like a nice summer's day. And that was really enough for me.

More coming up, as you'd expect.

Earth, Wind & Fire - Intro

I admit that my memory might be hazy, but here's the story as I can recall it: my Dad got HBO very early on as part of a special deal, and every day they would start their programming at about 4:30 by showing The Water Babies and then segue into more serious movies. One night I was flipping channels and I saw a screaming hawk made out of laser beams and heard the words Earth earth earth Wind wind wind & Fire and I was madly in love with whatever happened next. I recall having to choose between watching the concert or watching Doctor Who on my local PBS station. Then my dad came home early and put it on the news so I watched neither. But I never forgot the band's name. You don't forget a band that brings you a screaming laser hawk.

Earth, Wind & Fire - Got To Get You Into My Life

Although it wasn't the best movie ever made, I was super excited to watch Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on a TV and radio simulcast. Really. The local radio station played the sound over the stereo and the TV station showed the video through the TV. And guess what? It was COMPLETELY out of sync and everyone panned it like it was the Star Wars Holiday Special. But this song was always held up as a high point, maybe cause hating on this would be like getting mad at Mozart. Maurice White was, to the best of my knowledge, a Christian until the day he died, and it really shows in the love that pours out of every one of his songs. It's like the exact opposite of the blues.

Earth, Wind & Fire - Evil

Here's something I only learned while writing this tribute: Maurice White formed a trio to write songs for commercials, and that slowly turned into Earth, Wind & Fire. I'm glad he took his talents into pop music instead, but imagine how great the man could have been at writing advertising jingles! All those Earth, Wind & Fire crossover hits weren't an accident, you know. The band knew what they were doing.

Earth, Wind & Fire - To You (feat. Brian McKnight)

This tribute is just to one guy, but he wasn't ever alone. Refusing to break up Earth, Wind & Fire and go solo was a massive decision, and being a band leader likely wasn't easy. He also suffered from Parkinson's Disease later in life and had to take a break from the band's touring for a bit, falling into a kind of Brian Wilson role. The band still continues without him, but his presence will continue to be felt. God bless you for what you did for music, Maurice White. This kid from the South would have been way way different without that important summer's day.

Samsung 28" 4K LED-backlit Monitor

in the Middle Ages, this would have been a team of monks chanting your data in the form of zeroes and ones. Beautiful to listen to, but really time consuming when you're loading a web page.

In the days of King Arthur, this would have been a clever bard with a lute, wandering from town to town, singing the latest songs and telling of the latest news. Not quite as fast as just going on Reddit but possibly much more enjoyable than reading all the Reddit comments.

In the early 1900s this would have been a roving Vaudeville troupe, setting up somewhere outside of town and selling tickets to their entertaining humor and fun. Sort of like if you could only load YouTube once every six months.

In the 1930s this would have been a huge box-shaped radio in the living room, and you'd thrill to the adventures of your favorite super-heroes each week in audio form. You know, like podcasts?

In the 1950s this would have been in black and white, and a very serious man in a tie would have explained the many facets of the news to you while constantly smoking, like a father-figure who knew you'd make the right decision.

In the 1970s... well, you can go look at the 1970s entertainment even now. Pretty much they were in color. And a lot of them were really bad.

Today you're looking at a tiny monitor that can give you access to all of human history via a tiny cord that leads into the back of your computer. Isn't this just the best time to be alive?

So I guess being a World War I flying ace is cooler than solving mysteries. What I mean to say is that Snoopy beat out Scooby Doo in this round. But hey, you know what would be really cool? A World War I flying ace who also solves mysteries. And is a dog. Or I guess just like a Snoopy/Scooby Doo crossover where they fly around and solve mysteries and eat Scooby Snacks?

Either way, Joe Cool has moved on to the next round where he will take on the formidable Lassie. I get that Lassie is like, a totally classic dog, but I also feel like she's just kinda boring? I mean, yeah, she saves people and stuff but where's the flair? Where's the pizzazz? This is a big decision we've got to make here! We deserve a little showmanship.

On the other side of the bracket, Clifford continues to paw his way to the top, so all I'll say is this: SCRUFF MCGRUFF FOREVER!!! I will never in my life be able to forget this awesome theme song.
